How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh: Florist-Approved Care Tips

Oct 20, 2026
Fresh hydrangea flower arrangement handcrafted by Eloquent Flora

Fresh flowers can transform a room, mark an important moment and make an everyday gesture feel memorable. A few simple care habits can also help a bouquet stay attractive for longer. This guide explains how to keep cut flowers fresh using practical steps recommended by our florists at Eloquent Flora in Milton.

1. Start With a Clean Vase

Before adding flowers, wash the vase with warm water and dish soap. Rinse it thoroughly so no soap remains. A clean vase reduces the buildup that can clog flower stems and make the water cloudy.

If you are reusing a vase, pay particular attention to residue around the water line and inside narrow openings. Let the vase drain, then fill it with fresh room-temperature water unless the care instructions supplied with your arrangement recommend otherwise.

2. Trim the Stems Before Placing Them in Water

Use clean, sharp floral snips or a knife to remove approximately one to two centimetres from each stem. Cut on an angle to create a larger surface for water uptake and to prevent the base of the stem from sitting flat against the vase.

Avoid crushing the stems with dull scissors. Re-trim them every few days when you change the water. Woody stems and delicate hollow stems can need different handling, so follow any flower-specific instructions included with your order.

3. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line

Leaves left underwater break down quickly and can make the water cloudy. Remove foliage that would sit below the water line, while keeping the healthy leaves above the vase intact.

Check the arrangement each time you refresh the water. Remove any fallen petals or leaves from the vase rather than allowing them to remain submerged.

4. Use Fresh Water and Flower Food

Add the supplied flower food according to the package directions. More is not necessarily better: use the recommended amount for the volume of water in your vase.

Top up the vase as the flowers drink, and replace the water completely every two to three days—or sooner if it becomes cloudy. Wash the vase, re-trim the stems and add correctly mixed flower food again when available.

5. Keep Flowers Cool

Place the arrangement in a cool area away from direct sunlight, heating vents, fireplaces and appliances that release heat. A bright room is fine, but intense sun through a window can warm the water and cause delicate flowers to fade more quickly.

Avoid leaving flowers in a hot vehicle. During winter, protect them from freezing temperatures while travelling between the shop, car and destination.

6. Keep Flowers Away From Ripening Fruit

Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can accelerate the ageing of many cut flowers. Display your bouquet away from fruit bowls, especially bananas, apples, pears and avocados.

7. Remove Fading Blooms

Different flowers naturally age at different rates. Remove blooms that have finished so the remaining arrangement continues to look polished. Gently take out damaged petals, but avoid pulling away healthy outer petals that support the flower.

As the arrangement becomes smaller, moving it into a shorter or narrower clean vase can give the remaining flowers a fresh presentation.

Flower-Specific Care Tips

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas drink heavily and can react quickly when water is low. Check the vase daily, keep the stems freshly trimmed and place them in abundant clean water. Keep the arrangement away from heat and direct sun. Browse our hydrangea flower arrangements for available designs.

Roses

Re-trim rose stems with a clean angled cut and remove leaves that would sit underwater. If an outer guard petal becomes bruised, it may be removed carefully without disturbing the centre of the bloom. Explore our luxury flower arrangements for rose and mixed-flower designs.

Tulips

Tulips continue to move and grow after being cut. Keep the vase cool, rotate it if the stems lean strongly toward the light, and avoid overfilling a tall vase that forces the stems into an unnatural position.

Mixed Arrangements

A mixed bouquet contains flowers with different vase lives. Follow the general care steps above, remove individual blooms as they finish and refresh the water regularly so the remaining stems stay clean.

How Long Do Cut Flowers Last?

Vase life varies by flower variety, maturity, season, environment and care. Some flowers naturally last longer than others, and no exact number applies to every bouquet. Starting with fresh flowers, keeping the vase clean and maintaining the water give the arrangement its best opportunity to last.
